LOST

I have a guest on my blog!  It kinda makes me feel like one of those really popular blogs that usually have guest posts... but I am not popular.  I am honored to have my wonderful husband write some final words on our favorite show.... right here on my blog!  Without further ado.... Andy DeBruhl!

Was it worth it?  Were the years I have spent leading up to the finale worth it?  Were they wasted?  Was I satisfied with the conclusion?

These questions are debatable if one wanted to get nitpicky (I mean is watching The Office on Thursday's really worth it), but what I can answer is I am glad that I went on the six year journey that is Lost and the ending was absolutely satisfying with enough beauty and poignancy that I don't see any other television being able to top in the near future.

I have been reflecting on Lost for the day now that all is said and done, and I don't think I would change one iota of the show.

I would not trade for a second, staying up late with my roommates discussing the philosophical connections of John Locke the character in the show and his real life counterpart whose Theory of the mind is credited with the conceptions of identity and self.

I could never forget the season two premier in which my girlfriend (now wife whose blog I am writing on) attempted to make it across town to watch it with her brother, only to get about 10 mins down the road and realize there was no way we were going to make it and had to turn around so we wouldn't miss anything.

I cherish the dinners we have had with close friends on Tuesday nights discussing theories and mysteries of who is who and what is what in the mythology.

I loved the digging and looking for the mathematical connections of the golden ratio and the fateful numbers
 4 8 15 16 23 42.

I loved asking people if they watched Lost and getting excited when they said yes and bummed when the answer was, "I don't like being pulled on a string by shows that never answer anything."

I even loved reading Kelly's post on the season 6 premier and chuckling to myself.

I remember watching through Season 4 while my wife and I decorated the Christmas Tree.

Lost frustrated the mess out of me, but no other show has stimulated my mind has much as Lost has, by combing religion, philosophy, physics and mathematics into one entertaining dose.

When I step back though it was the characters I had developed a relationship with, a community if you will, of people to journey with and ask the tough questions of time travel, life, and death and what it means to have a "Cluckity Cluck Cluck Day."

I will never forget tearing up as Walt and Michael set sail leaving the others behind, or watching my wife cheer as Jin and Sun worked through a fractured marriage.  I watched Sawyer leave a con man's life behind to become a family man providing for Juliet and I was ecstatic to watch Jack work through his father issues to step forward as a sacrifice for what had become his family.

So was the light on the island ever fully explained? No. Did we find out what in the world Hurley bird was? No.  Who was ultimately right?  Jack, the man of science or Locke, the man of faith.

What was in Marsellus' Wallace briefcase from Pulp Fiction?  What in the world were the secret plans from The 39 Steps?  We never got an answer for the rabbits' foot in Mission Impossible III?

It doesn't matter, what matters is the journey, and while I am sure ABC loved the ratings and the ad revenue, Lost will forever be one of my all time favorite shows.

Great take on it, Andy. The ending was perfect and I wouldn't change a thing either. Just like in life, some questions will remain a mystery. Had no problem not getting all the answers. In the end, they didn't really matter anyway.
